In many ways this is my favorite book. How did it come to be? A few years back I was admiring (and photographing) a beautiful barn in Northern California, when a woman who lived near by came. "There's a story connected to that barn," she said. "What is it?" I asked. She said, "The farmer who built that barn got half way through with when he got sick. His two sons had to finish it."

That was the germ of the idea that brought me to writing THE BARN.

My ideas often start that way: just an idea to start me thinking about a story. But an idea is one thing, a book is another. Usually it takes about a year to do it all.
