One day--when I was living in Connecticut--I was looking at a map of the state. On the southern coast I noticed a whole cluster of tiny islands--the Thimble Islands--which had wonderful names. Wouldn't it be fun--I thought--to sail about those islands? Mind, at the time I was trying to learn to sail on a little boat called the "Snark." Since I never became a very good sailor, and never even visited the island, I took the next best way to get there: I invented a story about a boy, a boat and some islands.
