If you are a good writer, and you know what good writing is, one of the very hard aspects of writing is knowing that what you are currently writing is poor.
That may seem like a contradiction. Nevertheless, it is not. To write is hard enough. To write well is that much harder. Since, in all likelihood, what drew you to writing was and is good writing, you will be acutely aware of your own failings. Or should be.
It is useful to remember that nobody—NOBODY—writes anything well the first time. It is equally useful to recall that good writing comes about when you rewrite many times. It never can be said often enough; the time you take is always part of the equation when it comes to writing.
People often ask me what success in writing has given me. It’s simple: success in writing has given me the patience to work with my writing failures.
